To Juice Or To Blend? (Part 1)

That's a question I keep getting.

The answer is pretty straight forward - BOTH.

But, and there is a BUT...:

  • Not all juices & smoothies are made equal, meaning - they are not all  necessarily healthy (even if they are green).

  • There is a time and place for a smoothie and there is a time and a place for a juice

So let's break it down.

What is Juicing? Juicing involves the extraction of juice from fresh fruits and vegetables to create a drinkable cocktail of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. It’s a fast and convenient way to get nutrients into our bodies.

What not to get? Juices that sit on the supermarket shelf for weeks often contain artificial flavours, additives, and preservatives that are added to extend the shelf life. If you are getting one from the store make sure it says on the lable - raw, organic, cold pressed, unpasteurized... 

When to drink it? Best is first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. But as a general rule- 30 min before you eat or at least 1 hour after you've eaten. Drink it fresh. Vitamins and minerals can be destroyed with increased exposure to air and light, so to get the most from your juice, drink it right away.

What are the benefits of juicing?

  • Fast and easy absorption of nutrients

  • Increased energy levels

  • Clearer thinking

  • Glowing eyes and skin

  • Strong hair and nails

  • Heightened sense of taste and smell

  • Strengthened immune system

  • Improved appetite control

  • Provides a healthy rest for your digestive system

  • Health benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables that you wouldn’t normally eat raw or whole

All juices are not created equal: vegetable juices are nutrition powerhouses. Fruit juice, although an excellent source of vitamin C, they have a high glycemic load, which means the sugar is quickly absorbed by your body and raises your blood sugar levels. If you’re new to juicing, try adding apples, pears, lemon, or ginger to help make your vegetable juice more palatable. Slowly work towards a 3:1 ratio – three vegetables to one piece of fruit.

 

I personally prefer green juices. Greens strengthen the blood & respiratory system and are essential for establishing a healthy immune system. Especially If you live in areas with high amounts of pollution, greens (which are high alkaline foods) will help you filter out pollutants.

 

 

Green Goddess Recipe:  to replenish, cleanse and boost your energy!

Ingredients:

  • 3 celery stalks 

  • 2 handfuls of spinach or kale (or both) 

  • 1/2 an apple (or a whole one if you are new to green juicing) 

  • 1 cup of cucumber

  • 1 zucchini 

  • little piece of fresh ginger

  • 1/2 lemon

Directions:

Juice, drink and expect miracles!
